The Special Artists’ Concert is a unique opportunity to meet true masters of the trombone and tuba, who reveal the full range of sound, technique, and emotion in their interpretations. The program features works by contemporary composers from around the world, showcasing the vast stylistic and artistic potential of brass instruments.
Ricardo Mollá – To the MoonA lyrical, poetic piece by Spanish trombonist Ricardo Mollá, taking listeners on a musical journey to the Moon. In this expanded version for soloist and trombone ensemble, the work gains spatial depth and emotional richness, creating an atmosphere of reflection and elevation.
James Meador – Six PackWith humor and verve, James Meador presents six short miniatures, each with its own character — from lyrical to dance-like grooves. The tuba, often underestimated as a solo instrument, finds its full voice here thanks to the virtuosity of Jakub Sznajder.
Per-Erik Moreaus – Swedish Songs (arr. Lars Karlin)Scandinavian folk melodies in a modern arrangement by Lars Karlin captivate with their simplicity, melancholy, and song-like quality. Frederic Belli — one of today’s leading trombonists — introduces the audience to Swedish musical tradition, blending it with a contemporary performance aesthetic.
Johann Sebastian Bach – Selected movements from a Suite.
A masterpiece of Baroque form and counterpoint. In these selected movements, Bach’s music reveals a perfect balance of structure and expression. Through refined articulation and a deep sense of stylistic awareness, the performer brings out both the inner serenity and dance-like vitality of the suite, unveiling the timeless beauty of Bach’s music in the resonant voice of a brass instrument.
Eric Ewazen – Concertino for Trombone and EnsembleIn this classically structured, melodic, and deeply emotional composition by Ewazen, the main role belongs to the soloist — Mark Hampson. Though contemporary, the work is firmly rooted in the Romantic idiom and highlights the beauty of lyrical lines and the noble character of the trombone sound.
Daniel Schnyder – Trombone QuartetThe finale of the concert is an energetic and eclectic quartet by Swiss composer Daniel Schnyder. Trombone Unit Hannover, known for their precision, expression, and artistic boldness, perform this piece with passion and bravura. Jazz accents, complex rhythms, and colorful textures make this the perfect closing to the evening.
This concert is not only a showcase of masterful interpretations but also an affirmation of contemporary brass music — modern, colorful, and deeply emotional. The Special Artists invite us into a world where the trombone and tuba become voices of narrative, dreams, and pure expression.
